Saturday, 25th August: After a very chilly start, a pleasant morning, with a moderate north-westerly and a mix of warm sunshine and white cloud......
Ferry Pool: A Pied Flycatcher was on the corner of the Tramway, at the Ferry end this morning, along with a couple of Willow Warblers, whilst a pair of Bullfinches and a Garden Warbler were further along the Tramway, as were good numbers of Blackcaps and Whitethroats, and at least half a dozen Wheatears were around the pool and similar of Yellow Wagtails among the cows.
Most of the regular waders were present, including two Little Ringed Plovers, three Dunlin, c40 Black-tailed Godwits, c60 Lapwing and a few Redshank, along with the 26 Shelducks and similar of Teal, with a Common Sandpiper, a Greenshank and a Whimbrel in the channel opposite. (AH/AW/RHa/SHa)

Marsh Farm, Sidlesham: There was a good fall of migrants around the fields and hedges this morning, including a Redstart, a Spotted Flycatcher, 11 Whinchats, three Wheatears, three Yellow Wagtails, a Sedge Warbler, a Lesser Whitethroat, 10+ Willow Warblers and 20+ Whitethroats, along with 20+ Sand Martins and 50+ Swallows.
Also, there were three Stonechats present (presumably from the family that bred there), with two Ravens and two Buzzards over. (S&SaH)

Late this afternoon the Hooded Crow was re-located in fields in front of Marsh farm, but didn't stay long and after a few minutes flew off west. (AB)

There were a good selection of migrants, too, including four Whinchats in the horse field, at least seven Wheatears along the beach and a Spotted Flycatcher, a Garden Warbler, a couple of Reed and Sedge Warblers, three or four Lesser Whitethroats, Blackcaps and Chiffchaffs and 20+ Willow Warblers and Whitethroats.
Two Common Terns and six Sandwich Terns went west offshore, the seven Pale-bellied and single Dark-bellied Brent Geese were in the harbour, till the Osprey flushed them out over the spit, whilst among the large numbers of Dunlin, there were a Greenshank, a couple of Whimbrel, a Bar-tailed Godwit and three Common Sandpipers on the concrete slabs. North Wall: The Spoonbill was roosting with the Little Egrets this morning until flushed off by a combination of a low-flying plane and a sailing dinghy in the harbour! The Marsh Harriers and Osprey were also seen from this end of the harbour, with the latter sat on the mud off Owl Point for some while early on. Two Greenshank flew over calling, as did a more distant Spotted Redshank, whilst three Whimbrel in the saltmarsh were also notably vocal.
Also, there were four Whinchats, a Yellow Wagtail and at least eight Wheatears around Owl Point, a Garden Warbler - even singing briefly - in the hedges at Halsey's Farm, a dozen Whitethroats, similar of Reed Warbler and ten Willow Warblers along the banks and hedges and two Whimbrel, a Common Sandpiper and a Knot in White's Creek. Medmerry: Easton Lane to Stilt Pool - This afternoon there were seven Wheatears, a Whinchat, three Yellow Wagtails, a Corn Bunting and at least ten Yellowhammers seen along the banks, with a Common Sandpiper and a couple of Dunlin on the Stilt Pool and 40+ sand Martins over. (S&SaH)
Ivy Lake: The hybrid Barnacle x Canada Goose was among a big flock of Canada Geese and a Great Crested Grebe was with a very late youngster this afternoon. (AB)

Selsey Bill: There was nothing other than Gannets passing through offshore, but a small number of Sand Martins and Swallows headed out, whilst four Yellow Wagtails went west. Full log below....

Northcommon Farm: The Little Owl was present near where it was regularly seen last year - only the second sighting since the wood-pile it frequented was burnt last September! (BI)
Ferry Pool: There was a reasonable mix on the pool again this morning, including a Common Sandpiper, three Little Ringed Plovers, a Dunlin, the 26 Shelducks, c40 Teal, c40 Black-tailed Godwits and c60 Lapwings, with two more Common Sandpipers in Ferry Channel and two Greenshank and five Whimbrel off the Tramway.
There were still 20+ Whitethroats around the Tramway circuit, along with a Spotted Flycatcher, half a dozen Blackcaps and Lesser Whitethoats and 40+ Long-tailed Tits, whilst a Raven went over west. (AH)

North Wall: The Spoonbill was in White's Creek early this morning (IH/IB), but was not showing at high tide, though six Greenshank (single flock) were flying around calling before dropping down at the back of the harbour towards Owl Point, and three Whimbrel were also present. (OM)
Later, IL received a report of a Cattle Egret roosting with the Little Egrets at Owl Copse, this bird was located fairly soon after, feeding in a field amongst cattle in the north fields; a second Cattle Egret was then found in the Egret roost on the island. (IL/BI/IB/IH)

A Common Buzzard was present with young calling, and other raptors included a Peregrine and 2 Kestrels. We also logged 25 Black-tailed Godwits, 2 Greenshank, 2 Dunlin, 2 Common Sandpipers, 30 Sand Martins, 3 Yellow Wagtails, 7 Wheatears, 5 Whinchats, a Stonechat, 2 Whitethroats and a male Roe Deer (RJS/MG/CRJ).
Medmerry - Ham: The highlight here were six Wheatears and three Whinchats but other than these and few Whitethroats & Yellowhammers it was quiet. (BI)

Chi Harbour - Ella Nore: There were c.110 Mediterranean Gulls roosting on Ella Nore spit this afternoon...including at least 10 colour-ringed birds. Details will be forwarded when available. Earlier, c.20 Yellow Wagtails flew over nearby, heading for East Head. (PH)
Selsey Bill: A Balearic Shearwater going west at a leisurely pace at 8.15am was the highlight of a quite interesting sea-watch, which also included a Bonxie, four Common Terns, 30+ Sandwich Terns and 100+ Gannets west, and both the drake Common Scoter and female Eider close inshore on the water. Ferry Pool: A Spoonbill (presumably yesterday's Medmerry bird) flew over the pool and into the harbour at 11am. Otherwise it was the usual selection, including two Spotted Redshanks, a Knot, two Little Ringed Plovers, two Common Sandpipers, three Avocets, c60 Lapwings, c40 Black-tailed Godwits, 10 Redshank, c40 Teal and 26 Shelducks, with a Wheatear in the field and two Whimbrel in the channel opposite. Church Norton: A Whinchat that was along the path to the beach, a Wheatear on the concrete slabs and two Spotted Flycatchers in the hedges beyond the hide were the only passerines seen, besides a big loose flock of 50+ Sand Martins, 50+ House Martins and 20+ Swallows feeding over the hedgeline.

Medmerry: Of interest, a Polish Curlew has been reported wintering at Medmerry. The following information was received.....“One of our juvenile Curlew (a female from aviary breeding) with a GPS-GSM logger is wintering in RSPB Medmerry Nature Reserve. The Curlew has a yellow flag with code J55.” (with thanks to IL, RSPB Reserve warden).
