16th - 18th April 2023

Tuesday, 18th April: A very blustery morning in a fresh north-easterly breeze - cool and bright early on, slowly clouding up and warming up later...........

Selsey Bill: Eight Bar-tailed Godwit, 18  Whimbrels and a few Common and Sandwich Terns were about it for birds moving through, with a further 40 Sandwich Terns fishing offshore over a choppy sea, whilst a single Willow Warbler in the gardens was the only passerine of note on a very quiet morning! Full log below. (OM/SR/HW/AH/ABi)

Ferry Pool: A pair of Little Ringed Plovers were in the creek in the field this morning, with a Common Sandpiper along the pool and the Green Sandpiper was in the concealed pool, with possibly two different birds flying over later.
Otherwise, the pool just held c40 Black-tailed Godwits, 11 Avocets, a pair of Gadwall, six Teal and c30 Shovelers, whilst the two Spotted Redshanks and c30 Black-tailed Godwits were in the channel opposite before the tide pushed them off.
Also of note, two Lesser whitethroats were around the Discovery Area.(BFF/SMo/AH/ABi)

This evening both Spotted Redshanks were in the channel and Black-headed and Mediterranean Gulls were streaming into he harbour from the west. (AH)

Long Pool: A Whitethroat, two Blackcaps and a few Linnets, Sedge and Reed Warblers were along the pool, whilst several pairs of Lapwings were around the adjacent fields. (ABi)

Church Norton:
An incredible number of Mediterranean Gulls were on the water in front of Tern Island, stretching north well into the harbour, with an estimated count of 2,500 (there may have been more as so many birds were coming and going).
There wasn't too much else, though, beyond four Whimbrel near the benches, a Peregrine over several times, a few Blackcaps, Chiffchaffs and Willow Warblers, plus a Mistle Thrush by the Mound and walking down to the first Several and back via Greenlease Farm the only bird of note was a Green Woodpecker. (BFF/SMo)

Marsh Farm, Sidlesham: Due to tree felling the Chalder Lane rookery is down to 18 nests but there was still plenty of activity, whilst between Marsh and Chalder Farms there were five Blackcaps, two singing Chiffchaffs, a Willow Warbler, a Pied Wagtail, a Sedge Warbler, two Long-tailed Tits, a Jay, a Kestrel and two Shelducks, with a handful of Skylarks and two Swallows over the fields, but not a single Cattle Egret to be seen. (SR)

Medmerry: Medmerry Trail to Porthole Farm - At least half a dozen Whitethroats and Chiffchaffs, plus a couple of Sedge Warblers and Blackcaps were spread along the trail.
There were also several Cetti's Warblers, two of which were engaged in a prolonged sing-off, right out in the open and barely two feet apart, singing continuously and flapping their wings - mostly one at a time - at each other for about ten minutes before they both sped off, one in pursuit of the other.
At Porthole Farm and over the settling tanks there was a good gathering of hirundines, comprising of roughly 100 Swallows, 50 House Martins and 20 Sand Martins, whilst a Marsh Harrier went over and a Red Kite was seen here and at Wilson's Farm, but little else was about beyond three Shelducks on the fields and c200 Mediterranean Gulls going over east. (BFF/SMo/JWo/AH)
