19th -21st October 2024

Monday, 21st October: A complete contrast this morning, with just a light westerly breeze and dry until lunchtime, despite the heavily overcast conditions.......

Selsey BillTwo Great White Egrets flew over and far out to sea this morning, before what were presumably the same two birds re-appeared, heading off west, but there was little else to report beyond a few Swallows and Meadow Pipits west. Full log below. (AH/SR/IP)

Ferry Pool: The water level was very high this morning, with a single roosting Black-tailed Godwit the only wader present, though there were plenty of ducks, including eight Shelducks, six Wigeon and c50 Teal, Shovelers and Mallard. (AH)

Church NortonA Turtle Dove - a late bird and just the second of the year - flew over the beach and away over Priory Wood this morning. 
Also, a Tree Pipit went along the spit, where there were also 20+ Meadow Pipits, 40+ Linnets and a few Skylarks, whilst two Dartford Warblers and two or three Stonechats were along the front. Also, a Firecrest and a handful of Chiffchaffs were in the churchyard, along with two Jays, two Great Spotted Woodpeckers and a Sparrowhawk, with two Grey Wagtails and seven Meadow Pipits over there and a flock of 22 Curlews and 14 Red-legged Partridges were in the fields behind.
A Kingfisher, a lone Brent Goose, a Greenshank, a calling Whimbrel and half a dozen Bar-tailed Godwits, Grey Plovers and Dunlin were of note in an otherwise quiet harbour, with Redshanks the most conspicuous species, whilst there were also c30 Wigeon present, with another c70 sat on the sea offshore. North Wall: There were 200 Golden Plovers, six Snipe and four Spotted Redshanks out in the harbour this morning along with the regular mix of Wigeon, Teal, Shelduck, Redshanks, Lapwings, Curlews, Grey Plovers, Dunlin, and a Kingfisher that flew out from the sluice and along White’s Creek.
Two Rock Pipits were along the rocks, and 52 Swallows flew over, but it was otherwise quiet along the wall, while at Halsey’s Farm, a Stonechat, four Reed Buntings, five Greenfinches, 22 Goldfinches and a Song Thrush were in the bushes and a single Cattle Egret, c50 Rooks and a similar number of Jackdaws were around the fields.
A Goldcrest was in the trees by the paddock where there was also a Grey Wagtail, two Pied Wagtails, two Stonechats, a Great Spotted Woodpecker and a Chaffinch, with a Marsh Harrier, a Kestrel and c500 Wood Pigeons in the trees further back. (LP/MJa/CT/TRH)

Sunday, 20th OctoberStorm Ashley duly arrived this morning and by 8:30am there was heavy rain and strong southerly winds all across the Peninsula...

Selsey Bill: Two Sooty Shearwaters and nine Balearic Shearwaters went west a fair way out and there was a steady passage of Gannets and Auks for the seawatchers this morning. Full log below. (SH/PB/MRB/SR/MRe/BI)

Park Farm: A Grey Wagtail was here this morning. (SH)

Church Norton: Unsurprisingly. there was little on offer in the inclement conditions this morning! The churchyard held a Song Thrush and a few Blackbirds whilst in the harbour were c.10 Curlews, 3 Oystercatchers and c.15 Redshanks. (BI)

Saturday, 19th October:  An extremely damp start with heavy rain up to 8am, then clearing to leave a bright day with strong westerly winds...

Ferry Pool: It was very quiet today: one Little Egret, 12 Black-tailed Godwits, 38 Shoveler & 34 Teal being the totals here. (SR)

Church Norton: A Dartford Warbler was in the gorse, a Kingfisher was on the metalwork and there were c.20 Skylarks and c.25 Meadow Pipits along the spit with c.50 Linnets. Along the Severals were two Chiffchaffs, two or three Blackcaps and a single Stonechat. In the harbour were numbers of Wigeon and Teal, Grey Plovers, Redshanks, Curlews and Little Egrets. (BI)

North Wall:  There was no sign of the Ring Ouzels this morning, but 12 Pied Wagtails were in the paddock along with five Stonechats, a Jay and a Green Woodpecker, a Raven flew over and three Marsh Harriers (all female/immatures) were further back over the reeds.
A Rock Pipit was along the rocks and the adult Yellow-legged Gull was again out on the mud, but otherwise it was just the usual selection of wildfowl and waders out in the harbour including 50 Shelduck, 75 Wigeon and 25 Teal.
A Song Thrush and a few Reed Buntings, Greenfinches, Long-tailed Tits and Goldfinches were along the hedgerows, a Kingfisher flew over the Breech Pool, and at Halsey’s Farm, three Cattle Egrets were in the field, a Skylark was on the fence and four Swallows and a few Meadow Pipits flew over. Chi GPs: Drayton House pits - The monthly WeBS count this morning found the majority of the birds on North pit, where there were two Great White Egrets with four Little Egrets, 90 Pochard, 24 Tufted Ducks, six Shoveler, two Snipe and a Grey Wagtail. Other totals of interest, jointly between the two pits, included 38 Great Crested Grebes, 25 Cormorants and eight Grey Herons., plus several Cetti's Warblers and eight Chiffchaffs. (OM)

East Head: There was no sign of yesterday's reported Water Pipit today (per ebird)

Medmerry, Easton Lane to Stilt Pool: An Osprey was present this afternoon in the distant treeline at Ruth's Marsh, a Marsh Harrier was also in the vicinity, two Peregrines were hunting together and three Kestrels were noted. An Egyptian Goose was in the fields and 21 Stonechats, two Chiffchaffs, three Cetti's Warblers, a Yellowhammer and two Dartford Warblers were along the banks. On the Stilt Pool all that was of  note was a single Snipe.  (SaH/SH)
