Friday, 15th November: A still, but very grey and fairly cool morning in just  a light north-easterly breeze......

Selsey Bill: There were up to five Great Northern Divers about this morning, with a few auks going west and a mix of other species. Full log below. (SH/IP/AH/SR/PA)

Ferry Pool: The Avocet count had risen to 53 this morning, with 16 Black-tailed Godwits, six Shelducks, 60 Shovelers and Teal and c30 Wigeon and Mallards also present, and a Kingfisher flew across the pool. (AH)

North Wall: At least four Water Rails were seen or heard around the Breech Pool this morning, with five Snipe about, too, whilst a Stonechat and a Rock Pipit were along the wall and a male Marsh Harrier went over.
In White's Creek there were three Golden Plovers among c500 Lapwings, with c50 Knot. two Little Grebes, c100 Brent Geese and good numbers of Wigeon and Pintail also present. (PB/SP)

Pagham Spit: A smart drake Long-tailed Duck was on the water off the harbour entrance this morning, along with a Slavonian Grebe, whilst two Red-throated Divers flew west and two Red-breasted Mergansers headed east.
Out on the shingle islands at high tide there was a large roosting flock of several hundred Grey Plovers, Knot, Dunlin, Ringed Plovers, Turnstones and Oystercatchers and there were lots of small birds along the spit, with multiple Rock Pipits, Meadow Pipits, Skylarks, Linnets, House Sparrows and Goldfinches along with a Chiffchaff, a Dunnock and a Dartford Warbler. Church Norton: Two Slavonian Grebes were off the spit here, too - and given timings and where they were - and probably different to the other one seen (above), with two Great Crested Grebes on the sea, too.
At least 750 Brent Geese were in the harbour, alog with a few Wigeon and Teal, but, again, few waders on the high tide, though including the Whimbrel, a Greenshank and c100 Redshanks.
Also, two or three Chiffchaffs and Goldcrests were in the bushes and a couple of Meadow Pipits were along the beach. (AH)

Later, the Long-tailed Duck and all three Slavonian Grebes were offshore from the spit. (JC)

Also, a flock of c20 Long-tailed Tits were down the west side, accompanied by a Chiffchaff, a Firecrest and a Goldcrest, with a Kingfisher and two Reed Buntings also seen, whilst near the car park a Great Spotted Woodpecker and a Song Thrush were about. (CRJ)

East Head: This morning there were 500 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 700 Dunlin and four Sanderlings present at high tide. (GM)

Medmerry: Easton Lane to the Stilt Pool - Along the banks this afternoon there were five Dartford Warblers, a Chiffchaff, a Cetti's Warbler, two Goldcrests, nine Stonechats, four Yellowhammers, nine Reed Buntings and two Pied Wagtails.
Also, two Egyptian Geese, three Dunlin, around 300 Golden Plovers, 400 Lapwings and 300 Brent Geese were on/over the reserve, with a Peregrine, a Marsh Harrier, a Sparrowhawk and two Buzzards also about. (S&SaH)









Thursday, 14th November: A fairly cool morning of hazy sunshine and light cloud in an initially light north-westerly breeze, freshening as it went back to the north-east......

Selsey Bill: The first Slavonian Grebe of the autumn popped up offshore this morning, whilst a Goosander went east and a few divers were about.
Also, a lone Fieldfare flew in off the sea and a Merlin gave dramatic chase to a Meadow Pipit from way out, with the pipit eventually making land and diving into a bush to save itself. Full log below. (AH/IP/SR/ML)

Ferry Pool: There were 42 Avocets roosting on the pool again this morning, along with a Greenshank, three Spotted Redshanks and ten Black-tailed Godwits, with five Shelducks and 50 or so Wigeon Teal and Shovelers also present. (AH)

Selsey: Three Great White Egrets flew east over Asda, at the very north of the town, at 1012hrs this morning, but were not picked up in the harbour afterwards. (MRe)

Church Norton: It was pleasing to see two Slavonian Grebes offshore from the end of the spit this morning, with two Great Crested Grebes and a Great Northern Diver also about.
The harbour still held 500 Brent Geese at high tide, plus c100 Wigeon and Teal and c20 Pintails and Shovelers, along with 100+ Redshanks and a few Grey Plovers and Turnstones, whilst a vast flock of Knot Dunlin and Grey Plovers was on the shingle bars off Pagham Spit.
Also, a dozen Linnets and Skylarks were along the spit, but there were few other small birds beyond a pair of Stonechats along Rectory Lane. (AH)

North Wall: A Goldcrest was by the stables this morning, and around the paddock there were four Pied Wagtails, two Chiffchaffs, a Stonechat, a Meadow Pipit, a Song Thrush, a Green Woodpecker and a Great Spotted Woodpecker.
The Water Rails continued to show well on the Breech Pool, where there were also 17 Black-tailed Godwits, four Snipe, two Little Egrets, a Grey Heron, 36 Teal and over 100 Mallards, whilst out in the harbour at high tide 145 Brent Geese were on the water, with 27 Shelducks, six Pintail and lots of Wigeon and Teal. Wednesday, 13th November: A very pleasant morning, with lots of sunshine in a moderate north-easterly breeze...

Selsey Bill: A Velvet Scoter went east early on with two Common Scoters, and there were a few of the latter going west and offshore later, but it was generally quite quiet. Full log below. (AH/IP/SR)

Late morning at the Bill a flock of eight Eider flew west with three more later on and further out. Two Red-breasted Mergansers went east, as did a couple of Sandwich Terns along the shore. (AW)

Ferry Pool: The Green Sandpiper re-appeared, early this afternoon, and there were also 42 Avocets on the pool, along with a Little Egret, six Shelducks, 96 Wigeon, 32 Shovelers and 28 Teal. (AH/JC)

Park Farm, Selsey: A Ring-necked Parakeet flew over this evening. (SaH)

North Wall: A Kingfisher flew out from the sluice and along the rife this morning, and around the paddocks there were two Stonechats, a Green Woodpecker, a Great Spotted Woodpecker and four Collared Doves.
Three Water Rails were around the Breech Pool and 80 Teal, 16 Wigeon and 23 Mallards were on the water there, whilst the male and a female Marsh Harrier were over the reeds and two Reed Buntings, two Chiffchaffs, four Meadow Pipits and three Greenfinches were along the bushes.
Also, a Merlin flew across the harbour, a Rock Pipit was along the rocks, and at high tide, way out on the mud there was the usual mix of waders and wildfowl, whilst at Halsey’s Farm a Peregrine and a Sparrowhawk both flew through, but otherwise there was just a few Wigeon and Teal along the rife. Church Norton: Most notable in a quick look this morning were the Brent Geese, with a minimum of 800 spread around the harbour, along with c20 Shelduck s and Wigeon and just a handful of Wigeon and Teal.
Very few waders were evident on the high tide, though a couple of Bar-tailed Godwits were among 100+ Redshanks roosting on Tern Island, but the bushes were devoid of interest. (AH)

Later in the morning there were two Green Woodpeckers and eight Meadow Pipits along the spit and a Song Thrush was along the beach in front of the Severals.
In the harbour there was a selection of waders roosting on the high tide, including Knot, Grey Plovers, Dunlin and Ringed Plovers. (AW)

This evening three female and one (possibly two) Marsh Harriers flew into roost in the Severals, and there were also a Dartford Warbler, two Stonechats, two Water Rails and a Sparrowhawk in the vicinity. (S&SaH)

Sidlesham: A Goosander went over Cow Lane today. (PA)

Medmerry: Medmerry Trail to Porthole Farm - Three Cetti's Warblers, ten Chiffchaffs, eight Linnets, 11 Pied Wagtails, 40 Skylarks, a Song Thrush, a Yellowhammer, 300 Wood Pigeons, three Kestrels and a Buzzard were the sum along the trail, and the feather of a Tawny Owl found on the path there. Medmerry: Windmill area - An elusive male Black Redstart was around the rocks in front of the windmill, where there was also a pair of Stonechats, three Meadow Pipits and the usual Kestrel. (AW)
