Saturday, 19th July: The wettest it has been in a very long time, with fairly steady rain until mid-morning, then slowly easing off in just a light westerly breeze....

Selsey Bill: It was predictably slow, but a few terns were about, including good numbers of Sandwich Terns taking fish back to the harbour. Full log below. (SR/IP/AH)

Ferry Pool: There was just a solitary Black-tailed Godwit on the pool this morning, plus two Whimbrel in the channel opposite. (AH)

Mill Pond Marsh: The Greenshank was still present this morning, along with two Black-tailed Godwits, whilst a Buzzard and c20 Sand Martins went over. (S&SaH)

Selsey: Two Coal Tits were in my garden this afternoon, together with a mixed flock of Blue and Great Tits. (AW)

Church Norton: There were still 80+ Sandwich Terns and a few Little and Common Terns about this morning, along with at least five Whimbrel, a Dunlin, a Turnstone, a few Ringed Plovers and Curlews and a least 40 Redshanks. (AH)

There were not that many Sandwich Terns in the harbour, but a few juveniles were among them, with young Little and Common Terns about, too, along with a young juvenile Kittiwake and a Common Gull among the Mediterranean Gulls.
At least three Common Sandpipers were about, along with a summer-plumaged Knot, ten Whimbrel, a few Dunlin and Ringed Plovers and c30 Redshanks, whilst later, at least 200 Sand Martins were over the harbour and 20+ House Martins were over the Mound. (PA/AWi/AH)

North Wall: Four Green Sandpipers were at the back of the Breech Pool and four Little Ringed Plovers, two Lapwings, two Redshanks and two Pied Wagtails were also present, as well as a fishing Common Tern, with a few Reed Warblers and Sedge Warblers along the reeds.
The Spotted Redshank was still by the rife at Halsey’s Farm and a Cattle Egret, a Grey Heron and two Little Egrets on the mud, with 17 more Cattle Egrets around the cows in the fields, and c70 Sand Martins overhead along with a few Swallows and a Peregrine circling high in the sky..
Three Common Sandpipers flew out from Owl Water and another was along White’s Creek, where there was also two Greenshanks, five Whimbrels, three Black-tailed Godwits, seven Dunlin, eight Ringed Plovers, 25 Curlews, a Yellow-legged Gull and numerous Redshanks, Curlews and Oystercatchers. (LP/AWi)

Medmerry: Easton Lane to the Stilt Pool - Four Greenshanks, three Common Sandpipers, two Ringed Plovers, two Redshanks and five Oystercatchers, including a young one, on the Stilt Pool this afternoon, with a Whimbrel on the reserve, seven Common Terns around their rafts and four Sandwich Terns offshore.
Also, a Dartford Warbler, a Whitethroat, a Chiffchaff and six Yellowhammers along the banks, with ten Swallows and c50 Sand Martins, plus a Buzzard, over, (S&SaH)

Chichester GPs: Ivy Lake complex - There were at least 26 Egyptian Geese spread around the pits, with many juveniles among them, though not much else on the water beyond a handful of Gadwall and Tufted Ducks, c20 Canada Geese and lots of Coots.
Also, three Common Terns were about, but no hirundines at all, whilst a couple of families of Reed Warblers, two briefly singing Blackcaps and a couple of Chiffchaffs was about it along the path. (AH)

Friday, 18th July: After a murky and quite still start, slowly the morning brightened up as the south-westerly breeze began to increase..

Selsey Bill: There was a massive gull flock again offshore and there was a bit of variety among species seen, though nothing unexpected. Full log below. (IP/AH/SR/P&LH)

Ferry Pool: There were just two Shelducks and five Black-tailed Godwits on the pool this morning, whilst four Cattle Egrets were among the cows in the field. (AH)

Mill Pond Marsh: The Greenshank and 11 Black-tailed Godwits were present this morning, along with four Teal, the two families of Little Grebes, a Blackcap and half a dozen Reed Warblers, whilst five Swifts, a dozen Swallows and a Buzzard went over. (AH/P&LH)

North Wall: A Spotted Redshank was by the rife at Halsey’s Farm and a Kingfisher was fishing from the fence there, whilst four Little Ringed Plovers were on the Breech Pool, as well as two Pied Wagtails, three Lapwings and the regular Mallards, with a Whitethroat and a few Reed Warblers along the bushes, and a Buzzard overhead.
Two Common Sandpipers were by the sluice early on, and further along White’s Creek there were three Whimbrels, 25 Redshanks, two Curlews, and a Greenshank along the banks, whilst nine Canada Geese along with a single Greylag Goose flew in and landed on the mud. (MJa/LP/SP et al)

Church Norton: This morning there were 45 Little Terns around the harbour, along with a couple of Common Terns, 120 Sandwich Terns and c100 Mediterranean Gulls, with seven Whimbrel and eight Curlews also about, and 30 Swallows went over. (P&LH)

This evening there were still lots of terns about, including lots of juvenile Sandwich Terns and a few Common and Little Terns, but waders were few, with just a Common Sandpiper, a couple of Ringed Plovers and a dozen Turnstones and Redshanks about.
Also, c80 Sand Martins appeared out of no-where and started feeding over the water. (AH)

Medmerry: Easton Lane to the Stilt Pool - There were four Greenshanks, a juvenile Little Ringed Plover, five Ringed Plovers, seven Common Sandpipers, four Lapwings and a couple of Oystercatchers on the Stilt Pool this morning, along with c25 Canada Geese, half a dozen Mediterranean Gulls and three Common Terns, with another half a dozen of the latter around the rafts on the pool opposite and ten Sandwich Terns and c200 Mediterranean Gulls offshore.
A returning Yellow Wagtail was the best passerine, with a couple of Dartford Warblers, three Chiffchaffs and half a dozen Whitethroats also along the banks, together with c20 Yellowhammers, c50 Linnets, four Stonechats, four Meadow Pipits and half a dozen Skylarks, with c250 Sand Martins and c100 Swallows moving slowly west, and also three Cattle Egrets flew in separately from the north. Dell Quay: Along the creek this morning there were a Greenshank, a Whimbrel, six Curlews, ten Redshanks, three Grey Herons, eight Little Egrets, a Green Woodpecker and 78 Mute Swans. (P&LH)

West Itchenor: Two broods of House Martins were being fed at the artificial nests on Haines Boatyard office, whilst a dozen or so juveniles were flying about investigating nearby buildings. Two adult Swallows were around the buildings of Northshore Boatyard along with a further half dozen House Martins and along the shore was eight Black-tailed Godwits, four Curlews, seven Mediterranean Gulls, two Oystercatchers and a Redshank. Thursday, 17th July: A heavily overcast, but warm and muggy morning in a slowly freshening south-westerly breeze.....

Selsey Bill: There were a few Swifts and House Martins about, but apart from large numbers of Mediterranean Gulls again offshore, it remains quiet. Full log below. (AH/SR)

Long Pool: Up to a dozen Reed Warblers were seen this morning, along with a couple of Whitethroats, a Yellowhammer carrying food, two family parties of Reed Buntings and one of Linnets, plus a couple of Skylarks over the fields.
The mother Tufted Duck only seemed to have three well-grown young with her on the pool, whilst a Common Sandpiper was also on the pool, three Gadwall, two Whimbrel and a dozen Redshanks were along Ferry Channel and two Common Terns and four Sandwich Terns went west overhead. (AH)

Mill Pond Marsh: The Greenshank and a Black-tailed Godwit were still present, along with four Shovelers, four Teal, two families of Little Grebes and a Grey Heron, whilst a curlew and two Whimbrel few over, heading west.
The adjacent hedges and reeds were quite busy, with at least four Sedge Warblers, ten Reed Warblers, two Chiffchaffs and half a dozen Whitethroats seen, along with a couple of Swallows over. (AH)

North Wall: There ere still two Spotted Redshanks present this morning - one in the rife at the Halsey's farm end and one on the Breech Pool, where there were also three Little Ringed Plovers, a juvenile Water Rail and a Pied Wagtail, plus a gathering of 18 Little Egrets feeding together there.
There were also up to five Common Sandpipers along White's Creek, 16 Cattle Egrets in Honer 2 field, a couple of Whimbrel in the harbour, a Cetti's Warbler and a Green Woodpecker along the wall and 16 Sand Martins over. 
Also, a Sparrowhawk, with a House Sparrow in its talons, was sat on the road along Rectory Lane for a full minute before flying off. (PB/MJa/LP et al)

This evening a Spotted Redshank was in the creek at Halsey's Farm, but the Breech Pool just held a Little Ringed Plover, a Lapwing, a Redshank and three Black-tailed Godwits, whilst out in the harbour at least 50 Curlews were spread around the vegetated areas.
There were also half a dozen Sand Martins and a dozen Swallows about, with a couple of Chiffchaffs and Whitethroats ion the hedges at Halsey's Farm. (AH)

Church Norton: A fairly brief look at the harbour this morning found it still full of birds, including at least 300 Sandwich Terns, 500 Mediterranean Gulls and a few Little and Common Terns, whilst there were also seven Whimbrel present, along with a few Ringed Plovers, Curlews and Redshanks. (AH)
