Thursday, 31st July: A cool but humid morning in a moderate westerly breeze, under leaden skies and with the ever-present threat of a heavy thunderstorm..........

The funeral of Tony Hill will take place on Friday 22nd August at Arun Crematorium, Grevatt's Lane, Yapton at 11am followed by the wake at Robin Hood, Shripney Road, Bognor Regis. There is a request for no flowers. (IH)

Ferry Pool: A Common Sandpiper and a juvenile Little Ringed Plover were on the pool this morning, along with five Black-tailed Godwits and seven Redshanks. 
A look around the Discovery Area produced two or three Blackcaps and Whitethroats and a family of Long-tailed Tits, but not much else. (AH)

Mill Pond Marsh: There were just seven Black-tailed Godwits and two Teal on the flooded field, but there was still a good selection of warblers in the bushes, including half a dozen Whitethroats, Willow Warblers and Reed Warblers and a couple of Sedge Warblers and Chiffchaffs, with c30 Swallows and a dozen Sand Martins going over. Church Norton: There was little new to report this morning, though 100+ Sandwich Terns were still about, along with lots of freshly fledged Black-headed Gulls in the harbour, but half a dozen Whimbrel and Curlews and c80 Redshanks were the only waders noted, and the family of Whitethroats by the hedge were literally the only passerines seen. There were a lot less terns and gulls in the harbour this evening, with all but a handful having now  left the island, with a dozen or so juvenile Sandwich Terns and c20 Black-headed Gulls around the concrete blocks, with parents in attendance. (AH)

Wednesday, 30th July: A pleasant morning of sun and white cloud in a light to moderate north-westerly breeze.....

Selsey Bill: Another quiet morning, though there a couple of Willow Warblers and plenty of Sandwich Terns about. Full log below. (AH/SR)

Ferry Pool: There were an adult and three juvenile Little Ringed Plovers on the pool early on, along with five Black-tailed Godwits, a Lapwing and a Redshank. (AH)

Mill Pond Marsh: A Common Sandpiper, nine Black-tailed Godwits and two Teal were on the flooded field this morning, whilst the bushes along the front were busy again, with half a dozen or so Whitethroats, Willow, Sedge and Reed Warblers constantly coming and going. (AH)

Church Norton: At least 100 Sandwich Terns were in the harbour this morning, along with just a few Mediterranean Gulls, a Greenshank, a handful of Dunlin and Ringed Plovers, a couple of Whimbrel and a few Curlews and Redshanks.
The hedges and along the front were very quiet, though, with just a Lesser Whitethroat and a handful of Whitethroats and Linnets the sum. (AH et al)

North Wall: A Kingfisher was along White’s Creek early on, as well as the Spotted Redshank, 22 Black-tailed Godwits, c70 Redshanks, five Lapwings, three Whimbrel, eight Curlews, an Oystercatcher and c100 Dunlin, before they were all disturbed by a Peregrine flying over.
There were 18 Cattle Egrets in Owl Copse, 26 more sat out by their island and 28 around the cows in the fields at Halsey’s Farm, where another Kingfisher was along the rife, a juvenile Marsh Harrier flew over, a Common Sandpiper and two Lapwings were on the mud, and a Willow Warbler was again in the Tamerisk. Later on, there were the first two Avocets seen in a while, with two Spotted Redshanks, five Greenshanks, c90 Redshanks, 75 Curlews, a Grey Plover and an adult Yellow-legged Gull also about, with the Peregrine going over again. (AWi)

Medmerry: Easton Lane to the Stilt Pool - On the Stilt Pool today there were three Greenshanks, two Redshanks, two Oystercatchers, twelve Cormorants, six Lapwing, two Canada Geese and two Common Sandpipers.
Along the fence line there were at least half a dozen Stonechats, including several juveniles, and a Meadow Pipit, whilst on the banks there were two Yellowhammers, just one Whitethroat and a group of 20 Linnets at the southern end with others throughout, and two Buzzards were circling near to the barn. This evening there were two Greenshanks, two Common Sandpipers and two Redshanks on the Stilt Pool, with another Greenshank and Common Sandpiper on the reserve and eight Common Terns around the rafts.
The banks were fairly quiet, though with a fair mix, including a Yellow Wagtail, a Dartford Warbler,, four Willow Warblers, a Chiffchaff, three Whitethroats, a Stonechat and a Yellowhammer, whilst a Swift, six swallows, ten Sand Martins, a Sparrowhawk and three Kestrels went over. (S&SaH)

Tuesday, 29th July: Warming up slowly after a cool start, the morning remained heavily overcast throughout in just a light north-westerly breeze.....

Early this afternoon there were three juvenile Little Ringed Plovers on the pool, along with two Black-tailed Godwits. (AW)

Mill Pond Marsh: There were just eight Black-tailed Godwits and a few Mallards on the flooded field, with a Kingfisher flying through and a Sand Martin and c25 Swallows feeding over it, whilst the bushes along the front were busy with at least half a dozen Willow Warblers and Whitethroats, a couple of Sedge Warblers, up to a dozen Reed Warblers and a Reed Bunting. This evening there were 12 Black-tailed Godwits on the flooded field and c20 Sand Martins feeding over it, with a couple of willow warblers still around the bushes. (S&SaH)

Church Norton: Almost all of the Sandwich Terns and Black-headed Gulls had moved out of the fenced area since yesterday, with quite a few barely-fledged youngsters on the perimeter of the island, and more adults in the harbour.
There were also c80 Dunlin on the mud, but otherwise it was just the usual handful of Ringed Plovers, Whimbrels and Curlews and c50 Redshanks present, plus four Black-tailed Godwits that flew up through the harbour.
Also, a Wheatear was along the beach whilst a look around the churchyard/hide area produced a Lesser Whitethroat, a couple of Willow Warblers and Blackcaps and half a dozen Whitethroats. (AH/KF/KJ et al)

North Wall: A Wheatear was on the fence at Halsey’s Farm, along with c50 Swallows and a few Sand Martins, whilst a Kingfisher was along the rife, and two Willow Warblers, a Lesser Whitethroat, two Whitethroats, five Linnets, eight Reed Warblers and four Sedge Warblers were along the bushes.
Eighteen Cattle Egrets were out by their island, seven more were in the trees at Owl Copse, and another ten were around the cows in the fields, and along White’s Creek there was a Common Sandpiper, the Spotted Redshank, 18 Black-tailed Godwits and c50 Redshanks, with a few Dunlin further along. The Wheatear was still present this evening, with a Coal Tit at Halsey's Farm and half a dozen Willow Warblers and two Cetti's Warblers along the wall, whilst Merlin picked up a calling Crossbill, though it was not located.
There were also two Greenshanks about, with c10 Sand Martins, c20 Swallows, two juvenile Marsh Harriers, three Buzzards and two Kestrels over. (S&SaH)
