Wednesday, 24th September: A fairly cool morning of more cloud than sun in a fresh north-easterly breeze.........

Selsey Bill: There were c1500 House Martins and c750 Swallows over this morning, along with three Sand Martins and nine Siskins, whilst two Common Sandpipers went along the beach and 28 Chiffchaffs were in the bushes, but a few Wigeon and Sandwich Terns was about it offshore. Ferry Pool: There were just three Black-tailed Godwits and 17 Teal on the pool early this morning, whilst a Common Sandpiper was in the channel opposite and half a dozen Chiffchaffs were in the adjacent hedge.. (AH)

Marsh Farm, Sidlesham: The Glossy Ibis re-surfaced in the fields this morning, though it was fairly mobile. (AB/OM/AW et al)

North Wall: There were two Little Stints and a Dunlin in Bremere Rife at Halsey's Farm this morning, whilst two Wheatears were along the wall and in White's Creek there were two Spoonbills seven Curlew Sandpipers, three Spotted Redshanks, 28 Black-tailed Godwits, Snipe and a Kingfisher.

This evening the Glossy Ibis was in the Bremere Rife again at dusk and a Tawny Owl was calling from Owl Copse. (SP/LP)

Little Stints at the North Wall (LP)

Church Norton: Late this afternoon there was a Rock Pipit near the start of the spit and a Clouded Yellow at Greenlease Farm. At high tide there were two Pintail and a flock of 30 Grey Plovers flying around, but little else of note. (AW)

Medmerry: Easton Lane to the Stilt Pool - A male Redstart was on the sea-defence rocks this afternoon, whilst along the banks there were a Whinchat, a Wheatear, c20 Stonechats, c25 Chifchaffs, three Goldcrests and a Yellowhammer, with 17 Yellow Wagtails in the fields, a Kingfisher on the reserve and a House Martin, three Sand Martins and c30 Swallows over.
Also, a Greenshank was by the poplars, three Dunlin and four Ringed Plovers were on the Stilt Pool and two Sandwich Terns were offshore, whilst a good selection of raptors comprised a female Merlin, a male and two female Marsh Harriers, a Sparrowhawk, five Kestrels and seven Buzzards. Boat Trip from West Itchenor to the Mile Basket (off the Bill): Five of us joined six SDOS members for a trip up through Chichester Harbour and out to the sea off the Bill this morning.
The highlight was a juvenile Pomarine Skua offshore from the harbour mouth, by the Chichester Bar Chimet station, but seabirds were in fairly short supply offshore, with c20 Gannets, eight Shags, a Razorbill and a few Sandwich Terns and Common Scoters about it, though a couple of Brent Geese and c30 Wigeon went west, and c20 Meadow Pipits, c30 Swallows and single Sand and House Martins went over, heading for the coast.
Inside the harbour there were two Great White Egrets with a dozen Little Egrets out on the saltmarsh, with c25 Sandwich Terns and c100 Bar-tailed Godwits among the roosting Curlews and Oystercatchers, with up to ten Sanderling, 18 Shelducks and a few Brent Geese and Wigeon seen, too, whilst about a dozen Chiffchaffs were around the Harbour Office area. Tuesday, 23rd September: A decidedly cool, if bright morning in a freshening north-easterly breeze.........

Selsey Bill: The first two Brent Geese back, heading west, were the highlight, with it again slow offshore, and there was less moving overhead than recent days, too, though two Wheatears were on the beach. Full log below. (AH/IP)

Ferry Pool: A Green Sandpiper was on the roadside pool and a Whimbrel was in the channel opposite, this morning, but a Black-tailed Godwit and four Teal were all that was on the main pool. (AH)

There was bit of interest in Ferry Channel this evening, including two Spoonbills that flew in over the Ferry and away towards the harbour and a Spotted Redshank, a Common Sandpiper, a Black-tailed Godwit and a dozen Teal along the banks. (AH)

Mill Pond Marsh: Two Snipe and eight Black-tailed Godwits dropped in on the flooded field this morning, whilst half a dozen Chiffchaffs were along the hedges and a Sand Martin, six House Martins and c30 Swallows went over. (AH)

North Wall: A Glossy Ibis was along White’s Creek early this morning, before flying off towards Marsh Farm. (K Robinson)

Later there were two Spotted Redshanks, a Greenshank, a Knot, eight Grey Plovers and 18 Black-tailed Godwits in the creek, with three Grey Wagtails and a Kingfisher by the sluice.
A Whinchat and a Stonechat were in the bushes and a Wheatear was along the wall as well as eight Meadow Pipits, while further back over the fields, a Marsh Harrier and a Buzzard were present and four Egyptian Geese were heading north.
The Little Stint was again by the rife at Halsey’s Farm together with a Dunlin and a Kingfisher was in the reeds, whilst there were still eight Stonechats along the fence posts. (TRH/MJa/LP/NR/CT/JDW et al)

Later, there were three Wheatears along wall, including a bold, bright Greenland-type candidate, and a Stonechat in the paddocks. (MO-W)

This evening the Glossy Ibis was feeding in the twilight at Bremere Rife at Halsey's Farm, 63 Cattle Egrets came into roost at Owl Copse, a Kingfisher flew down Owl Water, a Tawny Owl was noted and six Stonechats were along the fenceline. (SaH/SH/BI)

Sidlesham: A Little Owl was calling loudly for several minutes along Cow Lane in the middle of last night. (AH)

Honer Reservoir: There was a Green Sandpiper on the reservoir this morning. (JDW)

Church Norton: There was a fall of 40+ Chiffchaffs around the sheltered hedges this morning, but not much else beyond a single Siskin, couple of Stonechats and half a dozen Blackcaps, plus three or four Jays, though c100 Swallows, c30 House Martins, three Sand Martins and c25 Meadow Pipits went over, heading east.
A Peregrine was sat out in the harbour and a Kingfisher hear the concrete blocks, but, otherwise there were just c20 Knot, c40 Dunlin and a few Ringed Plovers, along with the usual Curlews, Redshanks and Oystercatchers on the mud. (CRJ/AH/EB et al)

Late this afternoon three Brent Geese landed on the beach before continuing on west, whilst there was one Wheatear along the spit and a flock of 80+ Linnets near the harbour mouth. (AW)

Monday, 22nd September: A fresh and chill north-easterly was blowing this morning, though mostly sunny and warm out of the wind.....

Selsey Bill: Two Arctic Skuas and a Common Tern west were the best offshore, with visible migration dominating again, including a Woodlark, a Tree Pipit, four Yellow Wagtails, four Siskins and a constant churn of Swallows and House Martins. Full log below. (AH/MO-W/IP)

North Wall: A Little Stint was showing very well by the rife at Halsey’s Farm, and there was an impressive count of 21 Stonechats along the fences, with plenty of Meadow Pipits and Chiffchaffs also around the fields and bushes.
Three Wheatears were along the wall and a Whinchat, a Lesser Whitethroat, a Whitethroat, six Reed Buntings and nine Goldfinches were along the hedgerows, with a female Marsh Harrier, a Red Kite and a Buzzard over.
In White’s Creek two Kingfishers flew out from the sluice, a Greenshank was along the banks with two Curlew Sandpipers, a Common Sandpiper, 30 Dunlin, 30 Lapwings, the usual Redshanks and Black-tailed Godwits also about, whilst a Shoveler was on the water as well as a Tufted Duck, and the regular Pintail, Wigeon, Teal and Mallards. Marsh Farm, Sidlesham: This morning the area held a Spotted Flycatcher, a Whinchat, 12 Chaffinches, four Stonechats, five Blackcaps, two Goldcrests, nine Meadow Pipits, three flocks of Long-tailed Tits, c50 Chiffchaffs, c60 Swallows and House Martins, eight Linnets, 2two Cetti's Warblers, a Great Spotted Woodpecker, two Kestrels, a Buzzard, a Sparrowhawk, 12 Curlews and three Cattle Egrets. Church Norton: Two Spoonbills were roosting in the harbour, (well after the nine had passed the Bill, suggesting they were not necessarily the nine seen in the harbour at the weekend), and a Little Stint and at least ten Curlew Sandpipers were on the mud early on, but not later, when it was quiet beyond a hunting Marsh Harrier, with another heading for Greenlease Farm, and a steady stream of Swallows, House Martins and Meadow Pipits, over, going east.
Also, a dozen Stonechats were along the front and two Wheatears were opposite the first Several, but there wasn't much in the hedges, beyond a couple of Goldcrests, a couple of Blackcaps and half a dozen Chiffchaffs. (MRe/AW/IH/AHu/AH/IP/MO-W et al)

Also, a Merlin, a Snipe, two Kingfishers and ten Golden Plovers were around the reserve, plus a Marsh Harrier, a Sparrowhawk and two Buzzards. (S&SaH)
