Tuesday, 30th September: Another lovely, warm and sunny morning in just the lightest of northerly breezes......

Interesting update on the ringed Rock Pipit seen at the North Wall recently - it was ringed as an unfledged nestling on 18th May at Stavesto, on the southern tip of Norway, some 620 miles to our north-east. (Eds)

Selsey Bill: It was predictably quiet this morning, given the conditions, but it did produce the first Great Northern Diver of the autumn, and only the fourth September record this century. Full log below. (AH/IP)

Ferry Pool: A Green Sandpiper, a Snipe, a Black-tailed Godwit and two Redshanks were among c40 Lapwings and c50 Teal on the pool this morning, whilst a. Kingfisher flew down the channel opposite (AH)

Long Pool: At least 40 Chiffchaffs were along the pool this morning, with many feeding in the reeds, but a Cetti's Warbler and a couple of Blackcaps were all that could be found among them.
Also, the hedges held a couple of Yellowhammers, half a dozen Reed Buntings and a dozen Linnets, with a few Swallows going over, a Water Rail was calling from the reeds and a dozen Teal and c20 Redshanks was it for Ferry Channel. (AH)

Mill Pond Marsh: The Redstart was showing well again this morning, busily fly-catching in the company of a dozen Chiffchaffs, with three or four Blackcaps about, too.
Also, a single Black-tailed Godwit was on the flooded field, along with seven Shovelers, four Gadwall and c40 Teal. (AH)

Church Norton: A dozen Chiffchaffs, three Blackcaps, ten Long-tailed Tits and two Goldcrests were around the churchyard, whilst a Great Spotted Woodpecker and a Mistle Thrush were in the car park, and down the west side there were a Kingfisher, nine Swallows, ten Chiffchaffs and three Blackcaps.
Also, along the beach in front of the Several were six Swallows, two Blackcaps, five Chiffchaffs and ten Goldfinches, with at least five fresh Clouded Yellow butterflies seen, too. (CRJ)

Honer Reservoir: At least 20 Chiffchaffs and a couple of Blackcaps were around the hedges this morning, though nothing else, whilst the reservoir just held c30 Wigeon and a dozen or so Teal and Gadwall. (AH)

North Wall: A Goldcrest was in the trees by the stables and along White’s Creek there were two Spoonbills, three Curlew Sandpipers, a Common Sandpiper, a Grey Plover, a Kingfisher and c200 Wigeon and Teal, as well as a few Pintail, with a Yellow-legged Gull and 15 Shelducks out on the mud.
A Rock Pipit was along the wall and along the reeds and bushes there was a Reed Warbler, a Sedge Warbler, six Blackcaps, c20 Chiffchaffs, 12 Stonechats and a few Long-tailed Tits, whilst a Snipe and a Water Rail were around the Breech Pool.
Another Water Rail was along Owl Water, and at Halsey’s Farm, two Snipe were on the mud, five Cattle Egrets were in the fields, a Wheatear and c50 Meadow Pipits were along the fences and a Peregrine passed overhead.
There were also two very odd, hybrid ducks, possibly related/descended from to the one present last year, (TRH/LP/IH)

Also, a Lesser Emperor dragonfly was along Church Lane this afternoon. (per GJ)

This evening 91 Cattle Egrets came in to roost in Owl Copse and a Tawny Owl was calling from Halsey's Farm. (SP)

Medmerry: Easton Lane to the Stilt Pools - This morning there were numerous Stonechats throughout the banks, along with 16 Chiffchaffs, three unseen Cetti`s Warblers and three Yellowhammers.
Also, two Buzzards were next to one of the reservoirs with two more near to the shore and three Kestrels were hunting throughout the morning, but the only other things of note were 32 Cormorant's and three Green Woodpeckers. (GHi)

This evening a Barn Owl was out hunting the banks, with a Kingfisher, a Sparrowhawk, two Kestrels and two Buzzards about, too, and there were 20 Stonechats, 28 Chiffchaffs, 11 Yellowhammers, two Dartford Warblers and four Cetti's Warblers along the banks. (S&SaH)

Monday, 29th September:  A very pleasant morning of largely unbroken sunshine in a light north-easterly breeze......

Selsey Bill: There was quite a good selection of species this morning, including the first Redpoll of the autumn, nine Yellow Wagtails, a Wheatear, eight Stonechats, three Goldcrests and 23 Chiffchaffs, with 48 Brent Geese, 47 Wigeon and seven Shovelers heading west offshore. Ferry Pool: A Little Stint and a Green Sandpiper were on the small roadside pool, with another of the latter on the main pool, along with a Black-tailed Godwit, 24 Lapwings and c40 Teal. (AH/BFF)

Mill Pond Marsh: A Redstart was showing well in the bushes this morning, along with half a dozen Chiffchaffs, whilst a Reed Warbler was tucked in there and a Lesser Whitethroat was along Mill Lane.
Also, a Water Rail was noisy in the reeds and a Kingfisher dropped in, whilst three Shovelers, c25 Teal and a Little Grebe were on the flooded field. (AH/TG)

Pagham Spit: A couple of Wheatears and four Stonechats were along the spit this morning, with a steady stream of Meadow Pipits, Swallows and House Martins heading west. (TG)

North Wall: Two Spoonbills were along White’s Creek as well as seven Curlew Sandpipers, four Spotted Redshanks, a Common Sandpiper, a Greenshank, two Knot, an adult Yellow-legged Gull and a Kingfisher, plus two Ravens over and all the regulars.
Three Rock Pipits were on the wall and there was plenty of activity along the bushes with four Blackcaps, two Goldcrests, six Stonechats, two Reed Buntings, 20 Long-tailed Tits, a Jay, and numerous Chiffchaffs, Blue Tits and Great Tits, whilst further back a Marsh Harrier and a Buzzard were in the trees and a few Swallows, House Martins and Meadow Pipits were overhead.
At Halsey’s Farm a Kingfisher was fishing from bushes near the rife, a Water Rail and a Snipe were along the reeds, and c50 Meadow Pipits, ten Stonechats, a Lesser Whitethroat, a Great Spotted Woodpecker, and a Green Woodpecker were around the fields. (GHi/LP/CT/BFF/CSt et al)

Church Norton: A Wheatear flew across Rectory Lane, at least six Stonechats, a Whitethroat, three Blackcaps, a Goldcrest and five Reed Buntings were around the Severals/horse field area and 40+ Chiffchaffs were along all the hedges this morning, whilst two Yellow Wagtails, 86 Siskins, c50 Meadow Pipits, 13 Chaffinches, 15 Pied Wagtails, c30 Goldfinches, c200 Swallows and c100 House Martins went over, broadly heading east.
A noisy party of four Ravens also went over east, four Brent Geese went west offshore and a Marsh Harrier was hunting over the Severals, but the harbour just held two Spoonbills, a few Knot and Dunlin, c50 Wigeon and a few Pintail and Teal. (AH/MRe/BFF)

Medmerry: Easton Lane to the Stilt Pool - This morning there were c35 Stonechats, c25 Chiffchaffs and a dozen Goldcrests along the banks, together with four Dartford Warblers, three Cetti's Warblers and a Yellowhammer, with five Yellow Wagtails, 15 Pied Wagtails and c100 swallows going over, heading east.
There wasn't too much else, though, beyond a Greenshank on the Stilt Pool and two Marsh Harriers, four Kestrels and eight Buzzards on the wing. (S&SaH)

Ferry Pool: Two Little Stints were showing well at the left of the pool mid-morning and two Green Sandpipers were also present, one on the main pool and one on the hidden pool, as were two Ringed Plovers. 
A few Meadow Pipits were around the gravel mounds and a Grey & Yellow Wagtail were also noted. (IP/GW/BI) The two Little Stints were still present this afternoon at the front of the pool. (EM)

North Wall:  An Osprey flew over the wall and across the harbour early on, and along White’s Creek there were two Curlew Sandpipers, a Spotted Redshank, four Dunlin, a Kingfisher, and all of the regular species, with numbers of Wigeon and Lapwing noticeably increasing. 
A Wheatear was on the rocks, and along the hedgerows there was a Song Thrush, a Green Woodpecker, a Great Spotted Woodpecker, four Blackcaps, 12 Long-tailed Tits, and 18 Chiffchaffs, with a Marsh Harrier and a Buzzard further back. 
At Halsey’s Farm there were just two Stonechats on the fences and a few Meadow Pipits, Swallows and Sand Martins passing overhead, but it was quiet along the rife with just a Little Egret, a Grey Heron, and two Cormorants present. (MRi,LP,DHi)

This evening two Rock Pipits and one Wheatear were along the wall and two Spoonbills were out in the harbour. Two Marsh Harriers were also seen and other raptors included a Peregrine, a Sparrowhawk and three Kestrels. Three Water Rails were at the Breech Pool and a Kingfisher was here too. Twelve Chiffchaffs, four Cetti's Warblers, two Stonechats and a Lesser Whitethroat were around the hedgerows and six Swallows, a House Martin and four Yellow Wagtails flew over. Eight Common Seals were also logged, hauled up out in the middle of the harbour. (AB/SaH/SH)

Mill Pond Marsh: A Black-tailed Godwit, two Snipe and c.50 Teal were on the marsh and the hedges held a Great Spotted Woodpecker, five Chiffchaffs and a Reed Bunting. (IP)

Birdham: A Spotted Flycatcher was in a garden here today. (AB)

Medmerry: Easton Lane to the Stilt Pool - Two Marsh Harriers were over the reserve, as were five Kestrels and a Peregrine, and near the sluice were two Egyptian Geese, a Greenshank, a Kingfisher and a Snipe. 
Two Swallows flew over, c.50 Yellow Wagtails were with the cattle and the banks held 15 Chiffchaffs, three Cetti's Warblers, ten Stonechats, three Reed Buntings and seven Yellowhammers. Circa 50 Meadow Pipits went east and a Goldcrest and a Pied Wagtail were also seen. (SaH/SH)

Runcton: South of the village this morning were two Egyptian Geese, 54 Mallard, ten Teal, four Tufted Duck, five Little Grebes, a Buzzard, a Kestrel, five Moorhen, five Coot, a Green Sandpiper, 120 Black-headed Gull, two Mediterranean Gull, 25 Herring Gull, a Great Spotted Woodpecker, two Swallow, and 15 Chiffchaff. Also only the second time I have found Crimson Clover in the crop. (CRJ)
