Saturday, 25th October: Another fairly pleasant, sunny morning, despite the fresh westerly breeze..............

Selsey Bill: It remains quiet offshore, but there was a good selection of birds passing overhead, including a Bullfinch - rare here, six Crossbills,  two Bramblings and a few Redpolls and Siskins, plus the first significant autumn movement of Wood Pigeons, with a few Stock Doves among them. Ferry Pool: Early this morning there were just four Lapwings, 14 Shovelers and c40 Teal on the pool (AH), whilst this afternoon there were three Avocets on the pool, before they flew off west (RP/PA)

East Beach: The juvenile Turtle Dove was seen again briefly but couldn't be re-found, although a female Blackcap and a Sparrowhawk were seen. (SR)

Selsey: A flock of 18 Crossbills went west over the north of the town this morning. (MRe)

Church Norton: Two Red Kites went west over the west side today, and there were also two Marsh Harriers and a Peregrine about, too, whilst a fairly quiet harbour held c50 Brent Geese, c40 Pintail and Wigeon, c20 Teal and a couple of Little and Great Crested Grebes, but very few waders, with just c40 Golden Plovers, a couple of Knot and Turnstones and a dozen or so Dunlin and Grey Plovers of note.
Also, three Common Gulls and a Mediterranean Gull were in the harbour and a Sandwich Tern and a Gannet were offshore, whilst five Swallows, a pair of Stonechats, a dozen Skylarks and c50 Linnets were along the beach. 
A Water Rail, a Dartford Warbler and a Stonechat were along the west side, whilst a Coal Tit, a Firecrest, a dozen Goldcrests, three Chiffchaffs, a Blackcap and a Green Woodpecker were around the churchyard/hide area. (PB/BI//CRJ/KB/AH et al)

North Wall: Two Fieldfares were briefly along the hedgerow behind the Breech Pool, and three Marsh Harriers were further back over the reeds, while it was busy along the wall, with four Wheatears, eight Rock Pipits, three Meadow Pipits, 20 Stonechats, 16 Chiffchaffs, 12 Long-tailed Tits, a Yellowhammer and a flock of c100 Linnets.
A Kingfisher was along the rife at Halsey’s Farm, but it was otherwise quiet there, with just a Redshank on the mud and four Skylarks overhead.
Two Spotted Redshanks were still along White’s Creek as well as all the regular species, and a huge flock of c800 Wood Pigeons passed high overhead. (MJa/LP)

Friday, 24th October: A bright, but cold morning in a brisk and blustery westerly breeze..............

Selsey Bill: Both a Great Northern Diver and a Red-throated Diver were around early on, but thereafter it was quiet. Full log below. (P&LH/KT/AH et al)

Ferry Pool: A Green Sandpiper was present early on, along with four Lapwings, 12 Teal, 18 Shovelers, three Herring Gulls and 29 Black-headed Gulls, whilst a Cetti's Warbler was calling nearby, six Red-legged Partridges were on the left bank and a Marsh Harrier went over the channel opposite. (JC)
Later in the morning, three Marsh Harriers went over the Tramway together, heading west and a few Siskins were in the trees by the visitor Centre (BFF/SL/SMo) and a Black-tailed Godwit and c50 Redshanks were in the channel (AH).

Selsey: There has been a female Black Redstart in our garden in the middle of the town for the last few days. (RS)

Church Norton: Birdwatchers outnumbered interesting birds this morning, with just 20-30 Knot, Dunlin and Grey Plovers in the harbour, plus a Black-tailed Godwit,  12 Brent Geese, a dozen Pintail, a couple of Shelducks and the usual mix of Redshanks, Curlews, Wigeon and Teal.
The land-side was equally quiet, with just a single Stonechat, a couple of Meadow Pipits and a handful of Chiffchaffs and Goldcrests in the sheltered areas and a lone Swallow over. (AH/KT/P&LH/RJS/JC/BFF/SL/SMo et al)

North Wall: Two Goldcrests were along the lane this morning, and it was busy around the sluice with a Kingfisher, two Pied Wagtails, six Rock Pipits and three Wheatears, whilst along White’s Creek there were two Spotted Redshanks amongst all the regular species. A Yellow-legged Gull was further out on the mud, with c200 Dunlin, c80 Grey Plovers, 58 Brent Geese, a Bar-tailed Godwit, four Turnstones and two Ringed Plovers.
Two Marsh Harriers were over the reeds, and at Owl Copse two Shovelers were on the water, whilst along the hedgerows and fences there were eight Stonechats, five Skylarks, six Meadow Pipits, ten Long-tailed Tits, four Chiffchaffs, two Linnets, six Reed Buntings and three Greenfinches. Thursday, 23rd October: Fortunately, the rain arrived early and fell overnight, leaving a distinctly cool, blustery and grey, though dry, morning in a fresh north-westerly breeze.........

Selsey Bill: The only thing of note on a very quiet morning was 16 Brent Geese west. Full log below. (AH)

Ferry Pool: There were just two Shelducks, two Lapwings and a few Black-headed Gulls present this morning. (AH)

This afternoon there were 21 Teal, 21 Shovelers, two Shelducks and half a dozen Black-headed Gulls on the pool, and a Chiffchaff was flycatching in the wind in the hedges at the back. (JC),

East Beach: A young-looking juvenile Turtle Dove dropped in on the garden for just a few minutes  late this afternoon, before flying off over Broad View.
This is the latest date this century and only the second October record, as well as only being the second record this year. (SR)

Also, earlier, a near full summer-plumaged Great Northern Diver was on the sea off East Beach. (MRe)

Church Norton: A Peregrine was out over the harbour this morning, whilst two Greenshanks, c20 Grey Plovers and c30 Dunlin were on the mud, with a dozen Pintail and Teal, four Shelducks and c30 Wigeon also about.
Also, around the sheltered hedges there were four Stonechats, two Blackcaps and half a dozen or so Chiffchaffs and Goldcrests, plus a Mistle Thrush in the churchyard. (AH)

Chichester GPs: There were 35 Egyptian Geese on Ivy Lake this morning, with three Chiffchaffs and a Cetti's Warbler along the hedges, whilst West Trout Lake held five Little Egrets, with a Redwing and ten Long-tailed Tits in the adjacent bushes and New Lake held three more Little Egrets, a Little Grebe and 11 Shovelers.
