20th -22nd July 2017

Saturday, 22nd July: After a very wet night, there was a bit of respite this morning, despite the strong south-westerly breeze and the odd squall, before further bands of rain set in from lunchtime...

Selsey, East Street: About 40 Swifts were feeding low over the buildings this evening. (AH)

Ferry Pool: There were five Avocets, two Common Sandpipers, four juvenile and two adult Little Ringed Plovers on the pool, plus c40 Black-tailed Godwits and two Teal on the pool,  a Kestrel was at the back and a Kingfisher flew over.  Also a buck Roe Deer was at the back.
At Ferry House corner there were two Lesser Whitethroats, with another behind the centre, and there were also one or two Blackcaps and Whitethroats about, and three Whimbrels were off the Tramway. (CRJ/AH)

Long Pool: There were a couple of Common Sandpipers present early on in Ferry Channel and a couple of Roe Deer in the adjacent fields. (AW)

A bit later the Spotted Redshank was in the inaccessible area in the middle of Ferry Channel with c50 Redshank, and one or two Reed and Sedge Warblers and Whitethoats were along the pool. (AH)

Church Norton: There were at least 20 Little Terns and 50 Sandwich Terns in the harbour at high tide, along with a few Common Terns and 20+ Mediterranean Gulls, plus a couple of Common Sandpipers, a couple of Whimbrel and a few Curlews, Redshank and Turnstones.
Also a lone Brent Goose flew through, a juvenile Peregrine was out in the harbour, a couple of Gannets were distantly offshore and the family of Swallows were still around the hide. (AH)

There wasn't too much different this evening, but there were at least a dozen juvenile Sandwich Terns and similar of Little Terns in the harbour. (AH)

Friday, 21st July: A dry start with a south-south east breeze with the possibility of the odd shower later in the day...

Ferry Pool: There were at least 30 Black-tailed Godwits on the Ferry Pool this morning along with five Avocets, two Little Ringed Plovers and a Common Sandpiper. A Green Woodpecker was also present and a Blackcap was in the hedgerow nearby. (AW) This evening along Ferry channel were a good number of Redshanks & Lapwings, a Little Egret and a Kingfisher. (AW)

Around the Discovery area there were up to ten Blackcaps and a couple of Whitethroats, plus a brief snippet of Chiffchaff song, and half a dozen Swifts went over west. 
Also there were three Brown Hares in the stubble field behind the EA yard.(AH)

Long Pool: The Spotted Redshank and two Greenshanks were lurking in the most inaccessible part of Ferry Channel, along with a Whimbrel and c150 Redshanks, and there were four Common Sandpipers at the pump end.
Along the pool itself there were a few Reed and Sedge Warblers, mostly keeping low, a family of Skylarks along the edge of the wheat field and c30 Swallows and a couple of Sand Martins went over. (AH)

North Wall: Very breezy here this morning keeping activity to a minimum but on the Breach Pool were 20+ Black-tailed Godwits and a Common Tern. (AW)

Medmerry: Easton Lane to the Stilt Pool - The wind was blowing here too and there was little along the banks other than a Yellowhammer or two and a few Goldfinches but on the Stilt Pool were two Common Sandpipers, three Little Ringed Plovers, 12 Avocets with at least 20 Sand Martins overhead. Church Norton: A skua - presumably an Arctic Skua, and possibly a juvenile - was inside the harbour this evening, chasing the terns. (AW)

Thursday, 20th July: A mainly cloudy morning and still fairly humid, with a fresh to strong westerly wind and the risk of a thundery shower, but the promise of sunny breaks later....

Selsey Bill: An Arctic Skua went east past Hillfield Road at 7.20am. (SH) A look between 7.30-8.00am produced just - Gannet - 27E, 12W, Mediterranean Gull - 1W  & Sandwich Tern - 2E, 3W. (AH)

Ferry Pool: There was no sign of yesterday's Wood Sandpiper this morning, though the Ruff was still present, along with a Common Sandpiper, a Green Sandpiper, three Little Ringed Plovers, a Dunlin, three Avocets and 35 Black-tailed Godwit, and there were a dozen Mediterranean Gulls on the adjacent stubble fields.
A Kingfisher flew along the channel opposite, where there was also a Spotted Redshank among c60 Redshank and a Common Sandpiper. (AH et al)

North Wall: Very little was on the Breech Pool this morning, with the water level having risen again; 16 Black-tailed Godwits were the only birds of note. (BFF)

Church Norton: There were still around 30 Little Terns and 50 Sandwich Terns in the harbour, but only a handful of Common Terns were present. Also about were a dozen Mediterranean Gulls, three Whimbrel, c30 Curlew, four Ringed Plovers, six Turnstones, a few Swallows and Linnets, plus a young Peregrine disturbing the terns. (AH)
