7th - 10th July 2018

Tuesday, 10th JulyA slightly cooler day, with a mix of sun and white cloud and a brisk northerly breeze...

Ferry Pool: There were two Common Sandpipers on the pool this morning, along with 16 Black-tailed Godwits, a handful of Lapwings and Redshanks, five Avocets, plus the chick, and four Red-legged Partridges. (PB/AH)
A Marsh Harrier was present over the fields at the back of the Ferry Pool at 2.15pm, but didn’t linger, whilst there were also a Sparrowhawk and 2+ Common Buzzards about. (MD)

Long Pool: A Great Crested Grebe with two young chicks was on the Long Pool early afternoon, along with eight Teal, and two Shelduck families and the usual waders, including 17 Curlew, a Whimbrel, 32 Common Redshank were in the harbour from Ferry Channel. (MD)
Church Norton: The seven Pale-bellied Brent were again together out in the harbour, but beyond good numbers of Curlews and a couple of Dunlin, there were very few waders about, whilst offshore there were six Gannets. (PB)
Later on, the seven Pale-bellied and a single Dark-bellied Brent Geese were grazing to the north of Tern Island, and there was also a single Common Sandpiper, two Whimbrels and 3 Teals about. (BFF/DM)

North Wall: The tide was up, with only a single Greenshank and 25 Black-tailed Godwits of note today. (BFF/DM)

West Itchenor: Walking from Itchenor church via Home Farm we spent a pleasant time scanning Chichester Channel from the Horse Pond viewpoint along the seawall, with at least four Whimbrel and 15 Dark-bellied Brent Geese out on the saltmarsh, and an Osprey went high over the southern tip of Pilsey Island. (BFF/DM)

Medmerry: Easton Lane to the Stilt Pool - There were at least half a dozen Yellowhammers and Reed Buntings along the banks and ditches, plus the odd Whitethroat and Reed Warbler, with large numbers of Skylarks and Linnets about and half a dozen Swallows and Sand Martins over west.
The Stilt Pool held six Little Ringed Plovers, including two juveniles and two well-grown Avocet chicks with their parents and two other juveniles, along with 33 Dunlin, five Lapwings and 14 Black-tailed Godwits. Also, a Common Tern dropped in, there were at least a dozen Teal present and a mother Tufted Duck had eight ducklings with her.

Monday, 9th JulyNo change in the very dry and sunny weather that has been prevailing for some while now, with a high pressure system still dominating....though a shade less hot than yesterday and just a light SW breeze...

Ferry Pool: There was just a Common Sandpiper, four Lapwings, seven Black-tailed Godwits and eight Avocets, plus the chick, on the pool this morning, with a couple of Whitethroats in the Discovery Area. (AH)

Church Norton: At high-tide the seven Pale-bellied Brent were together with the lone Dark-bellied Brent just visible away to the left. Also, there appears to be a few Little Terns nesting on the New ('Peregrine') Island.. (AW)

Not too much to report this evening, though there were at least six juvenile Sandwich Terns among the 80 or so present, and up to 20 Little Terns were sat out on the mud, too, plus a few Common Terns, but the only waders besides Redshank and Curlew were a Whimbrel and a Ringed Plover. (AH)

North Wall: The Breech Pool now has lots of muddy areas and a much-reduced water level, so looking ideal for waders, but it was a disappointment early this morning despite it being high-tide in the harbour....the best I could manage was a Common Sandpiper, ten Black-tailed Godwits, two Redshank, six Lapwing, a Snipe, a Little Grebe and a few Mallard! Out in the harbour were 20 Curlew, a Whimbrel, a single Knot and 40 more Black-tailed Godwits, whilst White's creek also failed to deliver, with just a Whimbrel, 10 Redshank and a Great Crested Grebe the only birds worth a mention. (OM/PC/JDW)
There was not much to add along the side of the harbour, though a couple of Little Terns were feeding in the channel and a Whitethroat was singing from the bushes. (AH)

Sunday, 8th July: Yet another very hot day, though with a little more cloud making it even more humid,  despite the light westerly breeze.....

Ferry Pool: A Common Sandpiper and half a dozen Black-tailed Godwits were at the back and there were also the six Avocets, plus the chick and a few Lapwings and Teal present, with the Reed Warbler still singing by the road. (AH/IP)

Also about in the harbour were the Yellow-legged Gull, a Common Sandpiper, a Whimbrel, four Dunlin, 20+ Curlews and similar of Black-tailed Godwits, plus a few Swallows over and a couple of Little Terns ventured up the channel. Also, a couple of Stock Doves were feeding on the seaweed and a Great Crested Grebe was hauled up in White's Creek.
On the Breech Pool there where were over 50 Black-tailed Godwits, a Snipe, half a dozen Teal and a Common Tern, with a young Whitethroat on the wall and lots of Reed and Sedge Warblers buzzing about, but little singing. (AH/BI/JDW)
