Friday, 18th October: More of the same today, a breezy westerly wind interspersed with some intense showers....

Selsey Bill: 0715-1000hrs (Wind WSW4) (C&ME/BI): A Razorbill was on the beach this morning, and there was a possibility it was oiled, but sadly the bird evaded attempts at capture and was last seen drifting c.40 yards offshore. Otherwise there was a fairly constant stream of Meadow Pipits over, a Merlin was offshore and a number of Kittiwakes & Gannets went west. Full log below.

Church Norton: It was rather quiet this morning with little in the harbour and only a few Chiffchaffs around the hedges. A walk along the severals and up to Oak Copse produced two Green Woodpeckers, a Cetti's Warbler and two roving flocks of mixed Tits but there was nothing else to be found in the strong breeze. (BI)

Ferry Pool:   There was very little activity in the blustery conditions this afternoon: a Kestrel was hunting over the field and a Cettis Warbler called from the reedbed.  The water level was high and the pool contained c50 Teal, 8 Shoveler and 3 Shelduck. (SR)





Thursday, 17th October: A brighter and cooler start with showers forecast throughout the day...

Selsey Bill:0715-0930hrs (Wind SSW4) (C&ME): There were nearly 100 gannets seen going west this morning in between the very heavy showers and there were also a few Arctic Skuas past. This evening seven Manx Shearwaters went west. Logs below:

Church Norton: A look between the showers produced 20 Knot roosting on the concrete blocks, a Whimbrel nearby and there were also six Chiffchaffs in the bushes. (CRJ)



Wednesday, 16th October A dark and dank start, after heavy overnight rain, with the prospect of drier weather later, winds from the south west...

Church Norton: The male Bearded Tit was still present at the first several late this afternoon and 2 Stonechats and a Chiffchaff were nearby. In the harbour  were 18 Brent Geese and 20 each of Knot & Grey Plover and c.8 Pied Wagtails flew over.(SH)


Runcton: A smart male Ring Ouzel was present in Runcton Lane today. (CRJ)


Medmerry: Breach area -  Not much was seen over the high tide but there were a few examples of both incoming and outgoing birds with a single newly arrived juvenile Brent Goose, with not even a hint of white neck collar, alongside 10 Sandwich Terns, a Kestrel was hunting and two Skylarks sang overhead. 
There were also seven Great Crested Grebes, one Curlew, two Stonechats, a Wheatear and several Pied Wagtails and Meadow Pipits. Also a nice group of Shaggy Inkcap fungi was around the caravans and near here was the first Black Redstart of the autumn. (SR) Later on in the day a Merlin was sat out in the reserve. (AW)

Medmerry: Ham area - Two adult Peregrines were sat on the derelict shed today and another Peregrine, this time a juvenile, was harassing a Sparrowhawk nearby. A pair of Stonechats were at the viewpoint and a Lesser Redpoll flew over here. 
A circular walk from and back to Oakhurst Farm produced 30 Skylarks, 20 Swalows, nine Pied Wagtails, five Chiffchaffs, two Cetti's Warblers, a Goldcrest, and singles of Great-spotted & Green Woodpeckers. There were also four Yellowhammers and flocks of Goldfinches and Linnets toalling 65 and 155 respectively. (CRJ)


North Wall: On a rising tide, Whites Creek contained c.50 Black-tailed Godwits with one Bar-tailed Godwit in their midst. There were also the usual Wigeon, Lapwing and Redshank as well as two Little Grebes and, further out, six Pintail. 
A Kingfisher was active and along the wall there was a Wheatear and also four Rock Pipits. In the bushes/hedges were a Stonechat, two Reed Buntings, a Wren and a Dartford Warbler. (IH et al)
