Monday, 21st October: A light north-north-easterly this morning with a bit of drizzle......

Selsey Bill: It was quiet on the sea, but a bit of visible migration included 26 Lesser Redpolls north. (C&ME/IP)

Church Norton: There were six red-breasted Merganser offshore and there was a bit of visible migration this morning, including eight House Martins over the harbour, 20 Jackdaws in off the sea, 11 Brent Geese west and three Pied Wagtails and ten Meadow Pipits along the beach. (IP)
This afternoon two Bramblings came in off the sea and landed near the Severals. In the harbour the Brent Geese flock had grown to around 100, while out on the sea there were still six Red-breasted Mergansers, plus a Great Northern Diver. (AW)
Also, this afternoon, a Coal Tit (British rather than Continental) was in the churchyard. (CRJ)

Chalder Farm: There wee five Cattle Egrets around the farm this afternoon. (TG-P)

Medmerry: Easton Lane to the Stilt Pool -  It was fairly quiet this afternoon, though what was probably the Australian shelduck flew over the new reservoirs, three Chiffchaffs, four Stonechats and two Cetti's Warblers were along the banks, 20 Brent Geese went west along the beach and a Sparrowhawk, five Dunlin and 100+ Golden Plovers went over. Pagham Medmerry Trail: A Yellow-browed Warbler was still showing and calling on & off today in the hedge along the footpath from the first bend. Also present were 10+ Chiffchaffs, two Blackcaps, a mixed Tit flock and overhead were a Red Kite and four Buzzards. (IP/SH/Sah/Rha/PB/BI/CRJ et al)

Ferry Pool: Early this morning there were ten Shelducks, c.50 Teal & seven Shovelers on the water, two Cetti's Warblers were calling nearby, a Kestrel and four Skylarks were overhead. On the fields and egdes were 35 Lapwings. (SR)

Medmerry: Easton Lane to the Stilt Pool - A Redwing was eating berries at Marsh Barn and a Greenshank was opposite, by the sluice. Also noted were Kestrel, Sparrowhawk, nine Stonechats, five Corn Buntings, five Yellowhammers, a Mistle Thrush, five Reed Buntings, three Cetti's Warblers, seven Chiffchaffs, a Green Woodpecker and three Brent Geese flew overhead. 
The Stilt Pool held 17 species but nothing out of the ordinary and included a Greenshank, a single Dunlin, two Gadwall, two Tufted Ducks, 21 Wigeon, c50 Teal, c20 Linnets, c30 Meadow Pipits and 27 Lapwing against a background of Skylark song. (SR)

Saturday, 19th October:  A drier & sunnier day with westerly winds still...

Park Farm, Selsey: This afternoon there were five Pied Wagtails, a Grey Wagtail, three Stonechats and two Sparrowhawks. (SH/SaH)

Warner Lane, Selsey: Two Red-legged Partridges, five Stonechats and two Chiffchaffs were in the horse padddocks at mid-day. (SR)


Church Norton: A Firecrest, a Goldcrest, a Siskin and seven Chiffchaffs were in the churchyard this morning and behind the hide was a Spotted Flycatcher. A Short-eared Owl was along the spit before being mobbed & flying out to sea and there were also two Wheatears and two Stonechats present here with three Wheatears also to be found on the concrete. 
There were a further three Stonechats along the severals, six in the horsefield and eight more in the fodder kale field and ten Swallows were also feeding overhead. In Oak Copse were a flock of Long-tailed Tits and several Goldcrests and Chiffchaffs and a Blackcap and two Cetti's Warblers were in the hedges. 
Nine Tufted Ducks were on the second several whilst offshore, a Red-throated Diver went west, a Shag was offshore and a single Kittiwake was in with a feeding flock of Gannets & Gulls. In the harbour were c.30 Brent Goose, c.50 Pintail, c.60 Teal and small numbers of the regular wildfowl and waders. Two Peregrines were out on the island, a Sparrowhawk was near the stone wall and two cronking Ravens went east as did 20 Skylarks. (CRJ/AW/IP/SH/SaH)

Pagham Medmerry Trail: A Yellow-browed Warbler was with Chiffchaffs by the left hand bend of the trail this morning but a good search later failed to relocate the bird. There were also four Buzzards, a Fieldfare and two Blackcaps in the area. (AW/SH/SaH/CRJ/BI)

Pagham west side: A late Wryneck was present at dusk near the old straw bales, also six Chiffchaffs, two Stonechats and two Avocets were seen. A Short-eared Owl was also seen by a visiting birder on the saltmarsh. (SH/P.Jones)

Pagham beach: No sign of any Long-tailed Blue butterflies today but two Siskins flew over. (CRJ)


Fishbourne Creek: The Ruff was still at the Lavant outfall this morning and a Kingfisher was nearby (later seen at Fishbourne Meadows) whilst a Peregrine was unsuccessfully hunting over the creek. There were eight Greenshank out in the main channel, a single Brent Goose was at Dell Quay and there were 14 Great Crested Grebes below Dell Quay. (RW)
