Wednesday, 19th MarchThe breeze was still from the north-east, but had abated somewhat, leaving it feeling a little milder in the hazy sunshine......

Selsey Bill: There was a good movement of over 900 Brent Geese, including two flocks of c300 bird, and over 200 Common Scoters east this morning, along with 28 Sandwich Terns and 22 Red-throated Divers, whilst five Fulmars went west, two Slavonian Grebes and 14 Great Northern Divers, including eight together, were offshore and 60 Meadow Pipits came in off the sea. Later in the morning, a Sand Martin came in off the sea, along with 42 Meadow Pipits, including a flock of 21 that dropped in on the Oval Field. Full log below. (P&LH)

Ferry Pool: There were the same species as recently, but in variable numbers, including two Avocets, c30 Lapwings, c40 Black-tailed Godwits, four Gadwall, ten Shelducks, c60 Teal, c80 Shovelers and c150 Wigeon. (AH)

Church Norton: A Greylag Goose flew east over the harbour, but only two Brent Geese could be seen, along with c20 Shelducks and a dozen or so Wigeon and Teal, and waders included four Bar-tailed Godwits, c20 Knot and Grey Plovers and c100 Dunlin, but there wasn't much else to report. (AH)

Later, three Slavonian Grebes were offshore, along with two distant, probable Red-throated Divers. (JC)

Selsey Peninsula: At least one Long-eared Owl was still present today. (Eds)

North Wall: A Spotted Redshank was along White’s Creek this morning, together with four Black-tailed Godwits, 28 Redshanks, two Snipe, two Little Grebes, and a few Wigeon, Teal, and Pintail, with another Spotted Redshank along the channel by the Halsey’s outfall.
In the fields at Halsey’s Farm, two Skylarks were up singing, four Meadow Pipits were about, and there were still c100 Wigeon by the rife, whilst a Grey Heron was sitting on a nest in the trees at Owl Copse, eight Chiffchaffs were in the bushes, and a Sparrowhawk passed overhead, but it was otherwise quiet along the wall with just a Reed Bunting and a few Goldfinches seen.
Also, the pair of Kestrels were again around the paddocks, where there was also a Song Thrush, two Green Woodpeckers, and two Pied Wagtails, with a Buzzard and four Marsh Harriers up over the reeds. (LP/CT/MJa).

Medmerry: Easton Lane to the Stilt Pool - There were still wo Little Ringed Plovers on the Stilt Pool this morning, along with six Ringed Plovers, two Dunlin and two Black-tailed Godwits, with c40 Golden Plovers, a Marsh Harrier and seven Buzzards seen over the reserve.
The banks were fairly quiet, but included two Stonechats, a Chiffchaff, a Cetti's Warbler, two Pied Wagtails, a Reed Bunting and 15 Yellowhammers. (SH) 



Tuesday, 18th MarchA cold, but bright morning, with the brisk breeze persisting from the north-east.....

Selsey Bill: There was just a hint of eastward migration this morning, including an Avocet, 15 Common Scoters, six Red-throated Divers and 20 Brent Geese, with a flock of 13 of the latter coming in from way out, and a Chiffchaff came in off the sea, too. Full log below. (AH/SR/IP)

Runcton: To the south of the village this morning there were a pair of Mute Swans, two pairs of Egyptian Geese, a pair of Greylag Geese, a pair of Canada Geese, 18 Shelducks, 25 Mallard, 32 Shovelers, five pairs of Gadwall, ten Tufted Ducks, 36 Coots, two Moorhens, five Little Grebes, a Grey Heron, a Peregrine, two Green Woodpeckers, a Fieldfare, two Skylarks, and 18 Linnets. Fishbourne Creek: Around low tide there were 26 Pintails off the Lavant outflow and a Gadwall in the melee over the sewage works outlet. 
The island mid channel off Dell Quay had 48 Turnstones on it, and along the creek there were two Greenshanks, three Grey Plovers and an Avocet, whilst the gull flocks included two Lesser Black-backed Gulls and a good number of Mediterranean Gulls. (RW)

Medmerry: Easton Lane to the Stilt Pool - There were still two Little Ringed Plovers on the Stilt Pool this morning, along with four Ringed Plovers, two Dunlin, a Redshank, five Black-tailed Godwits and 16 Avocets, whilst two flocks of Brent Geese - totalling c40 birds - appeared to fly in from offshore.
The banks were quiet in the wind, but a pair of Stonechats, a Reed Bunting, a dozen Skylarks, c20 Yellowhammers and c100 Linnets were seen. (AH)

Monday, 17th MarchA generally cold, grey and overcast day, still with a brisk north-easterly breeze, though with a few brief interludes of brightness by afternoon.....

Selsey Bill: Another quiet morning, with a flock of a dozen Mediterranean Gulls east and a dozen Meadow Pipits in off the sea the only hint of migration. Full log below. (IP/SR/P&LH/AW)

Ferry Pool: Two Avocets and a dozen Lapwings were the only waders about, with wildfowl comprising four Gadwall, eight Shelducks, c60 Teal, c80 Shovelers and c100 Wigeon. (AH)

Long Pool: It was very quiet early this morning, with two Reed Buntings, two Cetti's Warblers and half a dozen Linnets along the path, a pair of Great Crested Grebes and a pair of Tufted Ducks on the pool, c30 Redshank in the channel and a Snipe over being about it. (AH)

Church Norton: The strong wind made things rather unpleasant so only a short visit this morning, which produced the usual wildfowl and waders, and no sign of any Knot or Whimbrel. The meagre highlight was two Mistle Thrushes over the churchyard. (L&PH)

Pagham Spit and Lagoon: Two Mediterranean Gulls and two Common Gulls were on the lagoon, as well as a Little Grebe and a Great Crested Grebe. It was quiet along the spit with just a Kingfisher on the metalwork, and a Skylark on the shale, in the offshore channel there were three Red Breasted Mergansers, with two more in the harbour, where there were also 54 Brent Geese and 32 Wigeon, and out on the mud a Bar-tailed Godwit was with three Black-tailed Godwits and a few Dunlin and Grey Plovers. North Wall: The Spotted Redshank was again by the sluice, but otherwise it was just the regular species out in the harbour.
A Kestrel, a Little Egret, a Pied Wagtail, a Song Thrush, a Green Woodpecker and a Great Spotted Woodpecker were around the paddock, and both male and female Marsh Harriers were up over the reeds, but that was about it. (CT/MJa/LP)

Medmerry: Easton Lane to the Stilt Pools - There were still two Little Ringed Plovers on the Stilt Pool today, along with five Ringed Plovers, 13 Avocets, four Dunlin, three Black-tailed Godwits, seven Lapwings and a few Wigeon and Teal, whilst around the reserve there were a Green Sandpiper, a Kingfisher, six Mediterranean Gulls, four Red-breasted Mergansers and 35 Brent Geese.
Four Fieldfares were the most notable things along the banks, with, otherwise, three Chiffchaffs, nine Reed Buntings,, c30 Yellowhammers and c200 Linnets noted. (PA)
